7 moments pulled straight from the comics on Sunday's episode of 'The Walking Dead'

Typically, I'll do one big "Walking Dead" post after the episode airs on details you may have missed. However, since Sunday's 90-minute episode was one giant smorgasbord for comic fans, it only felt appropriate to do a separate item dedicated to the show's comic parallels.

Nearly the entirety of season seven's fourth episode, "Service," played beat-for-beat from when Negan first stepped foot inside the Alexandria community in issue #103 from the comics. The show really nailed it, capturing everything from dialogue to imagery and gestures from the graphic series.

Fans may have been surprised to see AMC didn't hold back on a lot of the language used on Sunday's episode, proving that the show is committed to delivering a true adaptation of the series' racy, foul-mouthed antagonist Negan.

Keep reading to see how closely Sunday's episode mirrored the comics.

From the moment Negan first walked up to the Alexandria community gates crying "Little pig, little pig, let me in," the episode was a near-complete adaptation of issue #103.

The comics simply didn't have a chain-link fence over the gate to add dramatic effect.

In the comics, Negan brought along a big crowd of his Savior gang to check out the place.

Though Rick and his crew led Negan to believe Maggie's long gone on Sunday's episode, we know that isn't the case. The fifth episode of the season will center around Maggie and Sasha who headed to the Hilltop community at the end of the season seven premiere.

We'll also see more of Jesus, the Hilltop's resident ninja, along with a visit from some of Negan's saviors.

It also looks like the show will be changing things up from the comics by having Carl sneak out of Alexandria to head to the Hilltop with Enid.

Check out the first teaser for the episode below:

A second teaser, featuring Carl and Michonne, was also released:

Warning: There are spoilers and speculation for "The Walking Dead" ahead.

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" not only saw Negan reunite with Rick and the Alexandrians after the season seven premiere, but it also saw Daryl, now under the Savior's order, return for a short visit.

While Negan forbade Rick or any of the Alexandrians to speak to Daryl, some fans are convinced that didn't stop Daryl and Rick from communicating on Sunday's episode.

Some fervent fans are convinced that Daryl spoke to Rick through Morse code when he saw him. One reader even emailed to ask me if I noticed the two speaking in Morse code.

Here are two moments near the show's start — soon after the opening credits roll — where Daryl's doing a lot of blinking.

daryl morse codedaryl blinks

While the second one is not as convincing, Daryl's eye movements in the first GIF seem a bit more deliberate. Rick's hard stare at him afterward could be interpreted as him processing what Daryl just communicated.

Honestly, though, it's too hard for me to tell if Daryl's simply blinking or trying to deliver some coded message. Remember, Daryl's been locked away in a dark room for days on end with little access to the outside world. That real-world lighting is harsh on the eyes. You'd be blinking too.

He's also still a mess, blaming himself for Glenn's death in the season premiere. It's probably tough to look Rick in the eye.

daryl the walking dead

But maybe there is more to those blinks.

The Morse code idea comes from the fact that at the start of the episode, a prominent wall hanging is seen where Rick and Michonne live which displays a Morse code alphabet. Fans believe that it's too coincidental to simply show the alphabet without it meaning something more.

So is it a red herring or have Rick and the group been learning Morse code in case of an emergency? It's not something I would put past them.

morse code

For those who buy into the Morse code theory, Reddit user Darkwing_Darling claims Carol taught Daryl some basic Morse code back in season five while searching for Beth. It's become referenced in numerous theory posts by now. There's one problem with that. I went back and watched season five, episode six when Carol and Daryl were looking for Beth and saw no proof of this. I then went back and watched a compilation video of scenes with Carol and Daryl from season two through six and didn't find anything to support that.

But let's say Daryl did blink some sort of message to Rick. What did he say?

Fans think it's either "I East" or "HT," presumably for Hilltop. East could be a potential direction for where the Savior outpost is located. That would be good for Rick and the crew to know to either save Daryl and/or eventually attempt to wipe out the Saviors.

the walking dead negan rick

And if you're concerned that Rick has turned into a groveling sap at the sight of Negan, don't worry. Sure, he's been beaten down a bit so far this season, but Negan's entry was more of a wake up call for a leader who was starting to become cocky. Rick thought he had this post-apocalyptic world figured out. He didn't. He still doesn't. He needs to continue to adapt to an ever-changing world. (Wait until he gets a load of that tiger Ezekiel has!)

I think Rick's conversation with Spencer soon after the Saviors left shows us that Rick still has some fight left in him. He may look like a subservient puppy to Negan's every fantastical whim at the moment, but he's no dummy.

His look at the sign into Alexandria which reads "Mercy to the lost, Vengeance to the plunderer" is also another hint that Rick isn't just going to lie down and take it (knowing where the comics go from here helps, too).

rick alexandria sign

At the end of the episode, we see Rick watch and slowly follow the truck carrying Daryl as he rides back to the Sanctuary with the Saviors. If you're in the Morse code camp, you may think this is another prime opportunity for a quick chat.

rick daryl truck

Since the camera's from the point-of-view of the moving vehicle, it's tough to make out whether or not Rick is trying to blink out a message to Daryl. Similarly, since we're only seeing the back of Daryl's head, there's no way to know if Daryl's trying to communicate to Rick.

the walking dead daryl

If Daryl was indeed telling Rick a direction or giving him a piece of advice, it's something we'll probably know in the episodes to come.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on the Morse code theory. Feel free to email me at kacuna@thisisinsider.com. I'd love to hear them.

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" ended with something comic fans have been waiting to see since Negan and Carl's first exchange on the show in the season six finale.

When Jesus gets into a Savior truck at the end of season seven, episode four to find Negan's home, he's surprised to see Carl already hiding out in there — a nod to a big moment from the comics.

carl the walking dead

Comic fans may have been a bit disappointed when they didn't see Carl sneak off from Alexandria a week earlier in the Savior trucks, but it looks like he'll be heading to the Sanctuary compound now.

In issue #104 of the comics, a younger Carl sneaks into one of the trucks unbeknownst to his father or the Savior crew. He takes a machine gun with him hoping to kill Negan. When he arrives at the Sanctuary and is inevitably discovered, Carl fires off a barrage of gunfire killing several of Negan's men.

carl the walking deadcarl negan walking dead

Instead of getting angry, Negan's pretty impressed by the audacity of Rick's child. He takes Carl under his wing and gives him a grand tour of the Sanctuary to show him how he runs the place. He shows Carl the many women he calls his wives, asks to see what's under Carl's eye bandage, and shows the kid what he does to one of his men when they step out of line — as we already know, he puts a hot iron to their face.

However, that's what happened between Carl and Negan when only Carl made the trip to the Sanctuary, and at a much younger age.

Now that Carl's a teen, it's not clear whether those sort of antics would go unpunished. Unlike Carl in the comics though, this Carl won't have a machine gun on him (as far as we know) when he arrives at the Sanctuary. Remember, Negan and his crew recently took all of Rick's weapons during their recent raid of Alexandria.

Jesus is also joining Carl on this expedition so that should mix up how this trip will play out. In the comics, Jesus also ends up at the Sanctuary briefly, but it's because he gets caught by Dwight and is brought there to speak with Negan. Jesus sneaks away before he's brought to Negan and heads off to Alexandria to tell Rick he knows where the Sanctuary is located.

We'll have to wait until next week to see how it all plays out, but it should be fun, albeit nerve-racking, nonetheless.

Warning: There are spoilers below for "The Walking Dead."

The end of Sunday's "The Walking Dead" left many fans excited for next week, but you shouldn't get too excited. Though Carl was shown hitching a ride to Negan's encampment, the Sanctuary, along with Jesus, don't expect to find out next week what their adventure entails.

Next week's episode is expected to be centered around Tara and Heath. If you're going, who are those characters, they're two side characters who haven't had as much facetime lately.

It looks like AMC may be aware that an episode that's centric on two more minor characters may not make a great sell to viewers, so the series did something interesting Sunday night. Instead of delivering a preview of next week's episode, they delivered a preview for the weeks ahead. Pretty clever because it showed not only Tara and Heath, but also Rick, the Saviors, and Carol, who we last saw with King Ezekiel.

Check out the preview for the weeks ahead below:

Here's a slightly more extended look at next week's episode with Tara and Heath. If you were watching the series aftershow, "Talking Dead," it looks like Tara will run into at least two new characters.

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" reunited fans with Maggie and Sasha who made it safely to the Hilltop after the season seven premiere.

While viewers may have spotted a familiar watch in Maggie's possession, eagle-eyed viewers will have noticed several callbacks to season two. Keep reading to see seven things you may have missed from Sunday's episode.

Sasha hands the pocket watch Glenn had on him to his wife Maggie. She originally goes to leave it at Glenn's grave before passing it on to Enid.

Glenn was given that watch by Maggie's father, Hershel, back in season two, episode 11.

Hershel explains that his grandfather brought the watch over from Ireland. He continued to pass the watch down through the family.

Jesus brings blue flowers to Maggie while she's resting at the Hilltop and lays green ones at the graves or Abraham and Glenn.

"I read somewhere that blue flowers inspire strength and calm," Jesus tells Maggie.

He then lays green ones by the graves of Abraham and Glenn which he says symbolize, "release."

the walking dead chandler riggs carl grimes amc

Chandler Riggs' role on AMC's "The Walking Dead" isn't necessarily over because his contract is up, according to his mother.

Gina-Ann Riggs responded to a fan on Instagram who commented on fears that Riggs (who plays the son of Lori and Rick Grimes, Carl Grimes) is leaving the show, because his seven-year contract is up and he just got accepted to college at Alabama's Auburn University.

"Don't over analyze. His seven year contract is up. That's all he was saying, nothing else," Gina-Ann wrote on Instagram. "Pretty big accomplishment for a child actor (and for the parent who had to quit his job for this child to be able to follow his dream)."

chandler riggs leaving walking dead gina ann mom instagram

Fans had good reasons to fear Chandler's departure from the hit zombie series.

First, his father, William Riggs, posted a now-deleted message on Facebook that sounded to some fans as if his son was packing up now that his contract is up.

"7 year contract completed!” he wrote earlier this month.“Grateful to AMC, Cast & Crew, TWD fan base and especially Chandler for always being 100% dedicated. Whether it was getting up at 4AM, working in the freezing cold past 2AM, leaving his friends and carefree kiddom behind, scrambling to make up missed schoolwork, he has done it without complaint and always made me proud & amazed to be his dad!"

Second, Auburn University is more than two hours away from Atlanta where "The Walking Dead" shoots. That's not too far a schlep, but it could be tough for a busy college undergrad.

And finally, "The Walking Dead" is on a major character killing spree as of lately. Two major characters were killed recently by Negan and Chandler's Carl has been in the show villains crosshairs before.

Fans will just have to wait and see.

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" introduced viewers to a new community of women living by the sea. But before Tara came face to face with the Oceanside crew, she squared off against a horde of sand walkers with Heath.

An eager-to-scavenge Tara unveiled a bunch of zombies after trying to pry a bag loose from a massive pile of sand.

Executive producer Greg Nicotero oversaw the creation of the 18 mummified sand walkers in Sunday's episode.

"We wanted them to appear sort of monochromatic, like they've been under the sand for a long time," said Nicotero in a behind-the-scenes featurette for the episode. "We dust them down and then we put sand on top of them."

Stunt coordinator Monty Simons says four stuntmen and woman were buried underneath about six to eight inches of sand for the scene. Breathing tubes were given to the men and women being buried that stuck out of the sand ever so slightly.

On the series' aftershow, "The Talking Dead," Nicotero said the crew was inspired by 1979's "Zombie" for the look of the walkers.

"It was the Italian sequel to 'Dawn of the Dead.' That was our inspiration," said Nicotero. "We were like, 'Let's do zombies that look like old Italian horror movies. It would be really, really fun.' So we bleached all the wardrobe. We made full bodysuits that had rib cages and shoulder blades, and backbones."

"We got a chance to do what every zombie movie does — that great sort of 'Night of the Living of the Dead' moment of zombies coming out of the ground," he added. "It was very different."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" was centered around Tara finding a new community of women living together in the apocalypse, but next week will show us more of Rick, Michonne, Daryl, Jesus, and Negan.

AMC released two teasers for next week's episode. If you felt like episode six was a bit slow, next week should be pretty good.

Episode seven of season seven is called "Sing Me a Song." If you're a fan of the comic series, you're probably excited for what that title refers to. We're expecting some great scenes to come between Negan and Carl next episode.

Check out a teaser with Rick, Daryl, Negan and more below:

Check out another quick tease with Michonne below. After finding Alexandria's burned mattresses on the road in the last episode, it looks like she's not in a good mood and is out for some Savior blood.

the walking dead tara

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" revolved heavily around Tara, a character we haven't seen in awhile on the series, in part because the actress who plays her, Alanna Masterson, gave birth to a baby girl last November.

For those who were eager to see Tara back on screen, you may have noticed a few references back to the character in earlier episodes.

Keep reading to see five things you may have missed on Sunday's episode.

While Tara and Heath are out searching for supplies, Tara tells Heath the number one rule of scavenging is that "there's nothing left in this world that isn't hidden."

Heath is getting down about finding anything during their two-week search and Tara tries to keep him positive.

Her words mirror Glenn's from season five when he told her the same thing.

During a supply run, Glenn goes into a gun store. While Tara doubts there's anything left in there, Glenn comes out with three silencers. The news stuns Tara who's left speechless by his find.

He tells Maggie and Tara, "Rule number one of scavenging: There's nothing left in this world that isn't hidden."

Tara didn't know that Glenn was killed by Negan at this point, but it shows that his advice and his influence will live on in the group.

This painting, hung where Tara was being held, reads "Oceanside."

Dolores Abernathy mad Westworld

Warning: There are spoilers for various shows below including "Westworld" and "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "Westworld" came with two rather shocking reveals. First, it was confirmed that the series has been unfolding across multiple timeframes. Then it was revealed that Bernard, who was recently revealed to be a host in the park, was also modeled after the co-founder of Westworld, Arnold.

Eager fans even spotted early on that Bernard Lowe is an anagram for Arnold Weber, which was later revealed to be Arnold's full name.

Arnold Weber Bernard confirmed Westworld

For anyone monitoring the show closely on online forums or Reddit threads, you probably weren't shocked by these "Westworld" revelations. Fans have been calling the show's major plot twists since early on in the season.

Redditors postulated that Bernard Lowe was an anagram for Arnold Weber back after episode three aired. Various theories suggested that Bernard could be a host before the actual reveal in the show's seventh episode. Joanna Robinson, over at Vanity Fair, offered a three timeline theory after others suggested there may be two timelines.

Many are still waiting with bated breath to see whether one of the last major fan theories — that William (Jimmi Simpson) is actually a younger version of the mysterious Man in Black (Ed Harris) — becomes reality in the season's 90-minute season finale airing on December 4.

William episode nine Westworld

"Westworld" isn't the first time fans have called a show's big twists, and it certainly won't be the last.

In the age of online binge-watching, it's easy to freeze frame, screen grab, and go back to analyze scenes over and over again right after an episode airs instead of waiting around for it to re-air on television or for a boxed set to become available on Blu-ray and DVD.

Because of streaming, fans are allowed instant access to scrutinize over every detail — something they would never have been able to do before the age of Netflix or DVR.

I've tried to imagine what it would be like if another big phenomenon like J.J. Abrams' ABC hit "Lost" premiered in 2016 instead of over a decade ago in 2004. How many of the show's twists and turns may have been predicted before they hit the air? I'm not saying there weren't "Lost" theories before binge-watch culture — there were, and some were truly awful. But they were not nearly as accurate or as prevalent as anything you see today with "Westworld"or "The Walking Dead" on a weekly basis.

Pausing and screen grabbing live TV is what helped fans realize that Glenn on "The Walking Dead" didn't die early in season six when he landed into a pile of zombies. Many conjectured that he may have rolled under a nearby dumpster after analyzing stills from the episode. Several episodes later, fans learned that was exactly what happened.

What was supposed to be a huge reveal no longer had the same shock value since many viewers saw it coming.

glenn zombies walking deadglenn dumpster

After a first season full of surprises, Redditors were able to guess the big twist of "Mr. Robot" season two not long after the premiere episode. Meanwhile, fans of "The Flash" had a ball guessing season two's reveal about the true identity of a villain named Zoom.

Mr Robot

Currently, viewers are freaking out over a small moment that happened on season seven, episode five of "The Walking Dead" where Rick and Daryl may or may not have communicated via Morse code with each other. And a "Grey's Anatomy" theory from Entertainment Weekly suggests it may eventually be revealed that the main character, Meredith, is suffering from Alzheimer's just like her mother.

The list goes on.

daryl morse code

So what happens when we're able to predict the storylines of our favorite shows — are we disappointed in the showrunners for being predictable, or are we excited to have solved the puzzle laid out by creators? It seems like it's a bit of both.

Fan theories and their potential reveals can make a fandom feel empowered and even rewarded — "Westworld" co-creator Jonathan Nolan is even reading the show's subreddit— or they can make a fandom jaded.

In the case of "The Walking Dead," some reveals have started to become predictable to the point where it's causing fan backlash. Glenn's dumpster dive in season six resulted in many critics suggesting the show was wasting opportunities for great storytelling by offering cheap, predictable cliffhangers.

glenn walking dead amc alive

Here's how Vanity Fair covered "The Walking Dead" after Glenn was revealed to be alive: "How Glenn’s Fate Became the Worst-Kept Secret in 'Walking Dead' History: This week, 'Walking Dead' fans got some answers. But did it even matter?"

An article from a Forbes' contributor suggested "The Walking Dead""completely screwed up Glenn's story in season six." All of the tension from the season six, episode three cliffhanger was sucked dry and dragged out for weeks. During that time, astute fans were able to mull over footage from the episode, compare notes online, and correctly guess what happened on the series.

If this had aired in the '90s, maybe the reveal would have been more of a surprise. But in the digital age, these cliffhangers don't hold up as well.

On the flip side, not too many people seem disappointed with correctly guessing plot devices and twists in HBO's new drama "Westworld." After episode nine, a conversation submitted to the show's Reddit thread titled, "You guys are f---ing good" congratulated the subreddit for a job well done.

"All the subtleties, all the winks and nods...that is truly what makes this sub. And now I'll leave forever. No more tinkering with this one. Cheers. From now on... "Doesn't look like anything to me."

However, the ubiquity of theories has led to some viewers expecting grander twists and turns. When several theories for "Westworld" cropped up early in the season about the Man in Black potentially being an older version of William, some of my colleagues hoped that wasn't the case, and that a bigger reveal would happen.

Man in Black with Dolores Westworld

This obsessive nature of what I'll call active viewing (think active reading, but with a viewer heavily scrutinizing a show or movie in order to comprehend it better) has opened up a frenetic fandom that doesn't seem to care if they're spoiled. Half the fun is about seeing if they can correctly guess what will happen next, making for truly interactive television.

It's no coincidence aftershows for popular series became increasingly popular this year. As The Guardian's Paul MacInnes wrote, fan theories are becoming more of a talking point than the show itself. Fans want to mull over and discuss spoilers for shows. They want to be able to say, "I called it before it happened."

Though aftershows have been around as long MTV's "Real World/Road Rules Challenge," it wasn't until 2011 when AMC launched "The Walking Dead" aftershow "Talking Dead" that the appeal really started to stick. "Talking Dead" consistentlyremainsthe second most-watched show on cable television Sunday evenings.

Here's a quick list of a bunch of new aftershows that were announced in the past year:

• In March, BBC America, which is jointly owned by AMC and BBC Worldwide, announced it would launch "After the Black," to coincide with the latest season of "Orphan Black."
• In March, Fox announced it would air an "Empire" aftershow on the series' YouTube channel.
• In April, HBO launched an online-only discussion show for "Game of Thrones" called "After the Thrones.
• USA launched an hour-long aftershow for "Mr. Robot" called "Hacking Robot" in the summer.
• AMC has invested in "Talking Saul" (for "Breaking Bad" spin-off "Better Call Saul") and "Talking Preacher" for "Preacher." There's also "Talking Dead: Fear Edition" for "The Walking Dead" spin-off.

talking dead.JPG

Fan theories and their place in the pop culture conversation has become almost second nature to fans watching shows with massive followings like "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones." And the media knows it — if there's one theory that starts to become popular among a fandom, myself or a colleague will probably cover it in some shape or form, whether we're debunking it or finding evidence to support it.

Even if no one covers a theory, that doesn't stop people from discussing in their fandom hubs. Sometimes the aftershows bring up these theories to stir the pot.

Recently, someone said to me in passing that show theories are practically the new spoilers. It's an idea I initially scoffed at. Fan theories are theories and nothing more, or so I thought.

But what about when they come true, as we've seen more frequently over the past year with "Westworld" and "Mr. Robot," among others? Suddenly, they're not just theories, but accurate predictions that foretell the show's plot. Should we treat these theories then as potential spoilers?

Yes, according to "Westworld" co-creator Jonathan Nolan, who addressed that point recently to The Hollywood Reporter.

Bernard Lowe Westworld

"The thing about theorizing is that occasionally, you're going to be right,"Nolan said. "The distinction between a theory and a spoiler becomes moot if someone guesses correctly."

So yes, our obsession with fan theories is likely spoiling our favorite shows. While it may lead to some disappointment, fans can't seem to get enough of them.

Fan theories, speculation, and their ability to (at times) correctly predict a show are now the new norm, even for a casual viewer. With a new crop of aftershows and theorists primed for television, I expect to see even more of them moving forward.

'The Walking Dead' actress calls out 'Instagram trolls, body shamers' commenting on her weight

tara walking dead

The INSIDER Summary:

• Alanna Masterson plays Tara on "The Walking Dead."
• She recently gave birth to a daughter, and fans began commenting on her weight.
• Masterson said she wouldn't change her weight and it helped her daughter get the nutrition she needs.

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" centered around actress Alanna Masterson's character Tara as she stumbled upon a new community of women living on their own in the zombie apocalypse.

It was the first time fans saw Masterson's character in ten episodes, other than a dream sequence in the season 7 premiere, since Tara went on a two-week fruitless hunt scavenging with Heath.

While Tara was offscreen, Masterson gave birth to her now one-year-old daughter Marlowe.

Fans may have been tipped off that Masterson was pregnant on set of the show as her small frame was dressed in baggier, looser clothing throughout much of season six. Boards and chairs were among the objects used to cleverly hide Masterson's growing belly on screen while she continued to film. She wasn't in as many scenes, and when she did appear, she was often surrounded by a cast of other characters, detracting from her pregnant stomach.

walking dead tara

It's something Masterson joked about recently at New York Comic Con in October"Towards the end [of season six] you could definitely be like, 'Yeah, she's been eating a lot.'" Obviously, that wasn't the case.

Some didn't catch on to the fact that Masterson was pregnant though. After her reappearance on the seventh episode of the season, people took notice and started leaving messages about her being overweight. One commenter suggested she should get to a gym.

Masterson wasn't having any of it.

The 28-year-old actress took to her Instagram to call out the hecklers for being judgmental bullies and to let them know she's proud of her size.

Dear Instagram trolls, body shamers, and the men and woman who think it's ok to comment on my weight: I hope that you don't have children. And if you do, I hope you teach them about kindness and acceptance. I hope they learn that it isn't ok to make fun of people or call people names. I hope one day YOU learn what it takes to be a parent. A kind, selfless parent. A working parent. A parent that puts themselves in someone else's shoes. Maybe you can't get it through your thick fucking skull, but nursing a baby for a year (and pumping in a van between takes, in the dead of summer in Georgia) is a lot of work, determination, and scheduling. So before you decide to make a comment about my chest being "too large" or how "fat" I've become, just know that this little girl got the best start to life. I wouldn't have changed it for a second. I would've gladly continued to eat enough calories to produce milk for her little bones to grow. Also, grow the fuck up. Your mother should be ashamed for raising such a judgmental bully. I'm sure she knows how "courageous" you must be for trolling and hiding behind your Iphone and computers. P.s. I would LOVE to see any man or woman give birth to a baby, nurse the baby, and then work 17 hour days and NAIL their own stunts. P.s.s. Be kind to each other. We need it now more than ever. ❤️✌🏼️

Not only has Masterson been raising her daughter for the past year, but she's also been on set of "The Walking Dead" working 17-hour days doing her stunts while "pumping in a van between takes."

And Marlowe's been right there alongside her mother. Masterson recently said on the series' aftershow "Talking Dead" that her daughter was tucked away in a tent with a plugged in AC unit while she filmed out under the hot Georgia sun.

Also, grow the f--- up. ❤️✌🏼️

The Walking Dead

There may finally be a way to rank TV shows across all platforms.

Parrot Analytics has developed a tool to measure demand for shows, considering factors like viewing (where data is available), peer-to-peer sharing, social media chatter, viewer-generated ratings, and more. The firm shared with us an exclusive list of the hottest shows around the world from November 1-28.

AMC's "The Walking Dead" was on top of the pile, scoring higher than ever after the provocative beginning to its seventh season.

HBO finished strong with "Game of Thrones" and "Westworld" at two and three.

Then there are a bunch of US network shows, many of which are no doubt streamed on Netflix and the like. A striking six of them are based on DC Comics characters—"The Flash" at 4, "Lucifer" at 7, "Arrow" at 8, "Gotham" at 9, "Legends of Tomorrow" at 13, and "Supergirl" at 20. Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." sneaks in at 21.

The only Asian series on the list were Korean variety show "Running Man" at 15 and Japanese animations "Naruto: Shippuden" at 16 and "One Piece" at 18.

The only digital original series was Netflix's "Black Mirror" at 24.

These rankings, of course, rely on often tangential data, crunched with a black-box algorithm, but they may be the best we have. Parrot has generated plenty of buzz in the industry, announced partnerships with the likes of BBC and Fox, and made sharp predictions like how Netflix originals would flop in Japan.

Sunday's 'The Walking Dead' is a giant homage to the comics

carl the walking dead

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

"The Walking Dead" fans have been waiting for this episode for a while.

Ever since the series showed Carl sneak into the back of a Saviors' truck in the season's fifth episode, fans have been waiting to see if the show would adapt one of the character's biggest scenes. In issue #104, a younger Carl leaves Alexandra for the Saviors' Sanctuary to go after and kill Negan with a machine gun in tow.

Some weren't sure if the show would be able to execute the scene in the same manner. Since Negan had taken all of the Alexandrian's guns, Carl didn't have a gun at his disposal. That didn't end up stopping him Sunday night though.

Surprisingly, the majority of it followed issues #104 and #105 beat for beat, delivering a very satisfying episode for comic fans.

It all started with Carl killing several of Negan's men before demanding to see him.

Instead of being mad, Negan is quite taken with the teen, who lost one of his eyes in the last season of the show. Even though he kills two of his men — in the comics, it's six — he's excited to take his new guest inside and give him a grand tour of the Sanctuary.

The rest of the episode follows the comics closely as we watch Negan introduce Carl to the many wives he has accumulated in the apocalypse and gives a speech before the Saviors as they kneel before him. "Respect," Negan tells an impressionable Carl.

When one of his wives misbehaves by "cheating on him," Negan punishes her former husband by taking an iron to his face. It's similar to the punishment Dwight received. On the show, Dwight got the iron for disobeying Negan. In the comics, he received the iron for the exact same reason — for fooling around with his former wife while she was technically with Negan.

We see Negan interrogate and humiliate Carl, make him unwrap his injured eye and tell him how disgusting it is. He then punishes him for killing his men by forcing him to sing him a song, a nod to the episode's title. Carl chooses to mutter out a rendition of "You are my Sunshine." Whenever Carl shows a sign of being anything other than a badass, Negan tells him to cut it out because it ruins his image of Rick's tough-as-nails son.

The only part where the episode started to deviate from the source material was near the end when Negan decides to take Carl home to his father and then finds Rick's daughter Judith.

If you haven't read issues #104 and #105 of the graphic series, I recommend picking up copies. Sunday's episode was one of the most accurate adaptations from the comic show to date in terms of both imagery and dialogue.

Since Negan's introduction onto the series in season seven, the show has tried to mirror the character closely to his comic counterpart. The majority of his dialogue, save a few lines, comes directly from the comics.

negan walking dead

When we spoke with Greg Nicotero after the season seven premiere, he said that Negan, in a sense, admires Carl. The two have a "weird bond.

One of the most interesting parts of the episode is when Negan has Carl unveil his now-empty eye socket to him simply for his twisted delight. After Carl is visibly upset, Negan tells him he should proudly display his battle scars.

"All jokes aside, you look rad as hell," Negan tells Carl on the show. "I wouldn't cover that sh-- up. It may not be a hit with the ladies, but I swear to you, no one is gonna screw with you looking like that. No sir."

negan

That moment is an important one for Carl. It's the first time we've really seen someone on screen address his injury since it occurred in season six. No one, not even Carl's father, Rick, has given him a pep talk on how to feel about losing an eye. It's been wrapped up and hidden away under locks of hair almost to pretend as if it never occurred. Carl's own love interest Enid made a tiny jab at it recently when saying she's a better shot than Carl.

Negan appears to be the only one giving it to him straight. He isn't afraid to address Carl's injury or possibly hurt his feelings. Like his many other treasures in the apocalypse, Negan finds Carl to be another unique prize he has stumbled upon.

Expect the scene between Negan and Carl to most likely lay the foundation for more scenes between the two in the future.

'The Walking Dead' just fixed the one problem fans have been having so far with season 7

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" finally gave a lot of fans what they've been asking for in a rather slow-moving season. After several episodes which have focused primarily around single character story arcs, the season's seventh episode was a return to showcasing some of the series' main characters.

While the episode's main focus was certainly on Carl and Negan, we also saw glimpses of Daryl, still being held captive at the Sanctuary; Rick, who stumbled upon a strange boat with Aaron; and Michonne, who's on a one woman hunt to track down Negan against all odds.

We even got to see a few other characters including a much more confident Father Gabriel and Spencer who were off searching for goods.

For those who may have been bored by last week's episode, which focused heavily on one of the series' side characters who hasn't had a lot of screen time recently, it felt like a slight rejuvenation to a season that has been dedicated to showing off and introducing the series' larger world.

tara the walking dead

Episode seven may be exactly what the show needs at the moment.

Since the season seven premiere, in which it was revealed who the show's new villain killed off in the season six finale, the ratings for "The Walking Dead" have been on a downward spiral.

Here's a quick look at this season's ratings:

Season 7, Episode 1:17 million (the series' second-highest ratings ever)
Season 7, Episode 2: 12.5 million (It's noted that the series takes a larger dip in the season's second episode ratings than usual.)
Season 7, Episode 3:11.7 million
Season 7, Episode 4:11.4 million (It's mentioned that the show's main competition, "Westworld," sees a rise in viewers while its viewers decline again.)
Season 7, Episode 5: 11 million
Season 7, Episode 6:10.4 million (The series hits a 4-year low in ratings.)

While those numbers are still high — numbers any other network and series would kill for — they're lows for "The Walking Dead." The ratings are at their lowest point since season three.

Critics haven't taken kindly to recent episodes either. According to review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, season seven has had the series' weakest reviews. Season 7, episode 6, is now one of the show's worst-reviewed episodes of the series. A week prior, Erik Kain, a Forbes' contributor called the season's fifth episode the show's worst.

Except for the third episode of the season, most of the first half of this season hasn't revolved around Rick, Michonne, and the series' main characters. So far, we've had four episodes out of the season's first seven that have been focused on introducing new locations and many new characters — the Kingdom, with Ezekiel and his pet tiger Shiva; Negan's Sanctuary with his Saviors; more of the Hilltop, where Maggie now resides; and Oceanside, a community of women with a full armory.

ezekiel the walking dead shiva

In short, season seven has been dedicated to world building and heavy character development — all good things which, I expect, shall pay off in the second half of the season. But for fans who aren't glued to the comics, and can't forsee where the show is heading over the course of the second half of the season, it can certainly seem like the show may be dragging a bit because there have been so many episodes centered around few characters.

While "The Walking Dead" has had one-off episodes for characters before, like Morgan after his return last season and the Governor back in season four, the show may want to take more cues from HBO's hit "Game of Thrones," which also juggles a large cast of characters.

That show very rarely dedicates its full hour of television to one singular character. Instead, the episodes contain several story arcs per episode.

One fan on Reddit even made suggestions as to how "The Walking Dead"could have integrated multiple story arcs throughout each of the season's first seven episodes. Other than leaving the first episode the same, episode two wouldn't have just focused on The Kingdom. It would have also included Maggie at the Hilltop and teased some of Daryl at the Sanctuary. Those storylines would have played out over the next several episodes. Tara's singular detached episode would have been woven into the season starting in episode three.

It's an interesting look at how the season could have been edited differently. I wouldn't be surprised if a fan actually re-edits the past few episodes similarly after the season comes out on Blu-ray. You can read all of vI_M4YH3MZ_IV's season seven breakdown here

While the show may continue to have episodes dedicated to one or two characters, after the ratings for the first half of season seven, "The Walking Dead" will likely opt for episodes with more characters in the future. It's something I imagine we'll see more of in the series' second half of the season regardless.

negan joe the walking dead

Sunday's episode was a perfect example of how to balance servicing one character, Carl, while still showing what is going on in the world around him. The showrunners easily could have cut out Michonne, Rick, Rosita, and Spencer from this week's episode to solely focus on Carl's relationship with Negan, but they made it work. Of course, the episode's 90-minute runtime helped.

And that's one of the problems the show may be having right now. Maybe the world of "The Walking Dead" is simply becoming too large with too many characters. That may explain why this season has already delivered two 90-minute episodes. The mid-season finale will also be 90 minutes.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see many more extended episodes of the show moving forward, especially since "The Walking Dead" is AMC's biggest show.

AMC released a preview for the mid-season finale of "The Walking Dead," and boy is it a doozy.

Negan has Rick's daughter Judith at his disposal, Daryl is on the run at the Sanctuary, and the Kingdom appears to want to go to war with the Saviors.

How is that going to go over? From what we see, it's not looking good as Rick is left in tears during the teaser for next Sunday's episode.

The mid-season finale will be another 90-minute episode. Check it out below:

AMC released one more teaser scene featuring Olivia and Tara as they're waiting for Rick to return to Alexandria and come face to face with Negan.

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" showed more of the show's latest antagonist Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) parading around striking fear into everyone he came in contact with. But there was one character who finally had enough of Negan's foul mouth.

Olivia (Ann Mahoney) finally gave the Savior leader a taste of his own medicine, smacking him across the face after he suggests that it would be enjoyable to "screw her brains out"— if she agrees to it, of course.

The smack prompted many cheers from fans on social media.

Even actress Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, got in on it.

We've already learned that Negan has a group of wives at his disposal to do whatever he wants with whenever he pleases. Olivia wasn't having any of it.

On "The Walking Dead" aftershow, "Talking Dead" Mahoney said she really did slap Jeffrey Dean Morgan after he told her to go for it.

Mahoney said she warned Morgan that while Olivia may be a meek little thing, she is actually a pretty strong girl. According to Mahoney, Morgan was totally fine with that.

"We kept practicing, practicing, and this one take I was like, 'All right, I don't know if I should, but Jeffrey told me to, so I'm going to go ahead,' And I slapped the s--- out of him," she said. "So much so, that right when the take cut all the crew and all the executive producers came running out of video village going, 'Oooooo, she slapped the s--- out of you.'"

"Jeffrey was like, 'Jesus!'" she recalled.

Mahoney said she warned him, though. "I grew up with brothers," Mahoney said while giggling.

"Talking Dead" host Chris Hardwick confirmed that the take that made it into Sunday's episode was the one Mahoney referenced.

"When you watch it back and you see that Negan is a little taken aback by the slap, Jeffrey is actually — was not prepared for the Ann Mahoney tornado that came piling down on his face," said Hardwick. "The slapnado."

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" delivered for fans. Not only did the show return to form with a multitude of story arcs in one episode, but it also delivered one of the series' best comic adaptations to date.

While fans are now cheering over scenes with Negan and Carl together and are pondering what will happen in the series' mid-season finale, there's one tiny moment a lot of people are overlooking.

We're talking about that brief scene between Daryl and Carl at the Sanctuary.

Did you miss it?

When Carl walks past Daryl to head to the iron ceremony with Negan, it looks like Daryl says something very brief to Rick's son. Take a look.

daryl whisper carl walking dead

Ever since I've watched the episode, I've strained to hear what Daryl tells Carl to no avail. It's something fans started asking about last night. It was never addressed on the series' aftershow either.

I've been waiting for the episode to air so I could watch with the closed captioning on; however, when you get to that scene, no words pop up on the screen.

Instead, I felt mocked a the little music note floating atop Daryl's head.

Fans can't figure it out either.

I've been getting a few emails from fans and after rewatching the scene a few times it appears that Daryl says "Get away" to Carl.

Another reader pointed out that before Daryl says that to Carl, it seems as if the two shared a bit more dialogue. Go back to when you see Carl taking the tray from Daryl and it appears as if the two lean in and may exchange a few words. Carl gives a nod of his head.

Negan's too focused on looking Dwight in the eye after kissing his ex-wife in front of him to seem to care.

Take a look:

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "The Walking Dead."

Sunday's episode of "The Walking Dead" was a giant return to the show's main characters. While we got to see more of Rick, Michonne, and Eugene, the majority of the episode was a giant homage to the comics centered around Negan and his relationship with Carl.

Comic references aside, several moments from Sunday's episode called back to moments from the last season.

Keep reading to see if you noticed them all.

Near the beginning of the episode, glass bottles break and shatter out of one of the boxes in the Savior truck before Carl goes on his rampage.

Jesus sabotaged that box earlier in the episode on purpose. It was filled with Gregory's 21-year-old whiskey.

Oops.

We finally see Negan take an iron to someone's face Sunday night.

Mark got an iron to the face after Negan found out that he slept with one of his wives — Mark's old flame, Amber. Negan doesn't take too kindly to the news that one of his wives cheated on him. While he forgives Amber, who promises to stay faithful in the future, he dishes out a punishment to her ex, Mark.
